At the time of first writing this page I had made the journey to Gormanston five times. I will list here the various options for getting between Dublin Airport and Gormanston, but it should be noted that it is possible to arrive in Ireland at other airports or ports. Where information can be supplied by others that will prove helpful I will add it here.
My first journey was made more difficult because I was travelling on a Sunday and I had not researched the bus timetable in advance. I had instructions to travel by bus from Dublin Airport to Dublin Central Bus Station and then take another bus to Gormanston. As I am not of normal physical strength, this journey was both tiring and tiresome and as a result, I used a taxi for the return journey.
The years 2001 and 2002 were easy, as I was picked up by a friend and dropped at the door of the college.
2003 I had intended to use the bus, which by this time had been re-routed to go direct from Dublin to Belfast via the airport, but could not find the correct place to wait for it, I asked a rather officious gentleman in a peeked cap where I might find the Gormanston bus and he said he had never heard of it, so knowing that it would cost rather more than the bus I hailed a taxi... I said I expected it to cost more than the bus, because I had paid £20 in 2000, but I was not prepared for the staggering rip off of €90 that I was charged. I was lucky enough to get a lift on the return journey.
The year 2004 was different again as I could only obtain a flight that arrived in Dublin after both the busses and the Dart trains had finished for the night, but having advised the organisers of the course of my plight, I was lucky enough that they arranged for Eddie O'Sullivan to pick me up. I was delivered back to the airport by one of the college staff who had provided the previous night's bed and breakfast.
2005 I have again only been able to obtain a flight that gets me to Dublin at an unusual time, but I have researched the bus timetable and am prepared to risk it for the purpose of completing the entry on this page... It worked out alright, the fare only 3 Euro, but the walk form the Huntsman to the college carrying luggage, was cruel to my feeble frame.
2006 Owing to massive changes in the timetable that resulted in no busses on Sunday evenings I had to again call on the services of Eddie O'Sullivan and Seamus Reddy to ferry both myself and Kathy Cox from USA to the college.
2007 The bus service was re-vamped yet again, but this time a complete service was available on Sundays.
FIBKA put on a coach that picks up from the airport at about 4 pm on the Monday, but I have never yet availed myself of this free service, which also does the return journey at lunch time on the following Saturday. (My arrival and departure times have never yet coincided with this bus.)
This page will grow as various options for travel are researched and tested, I expect to put maps and the Dart train timetable on this website as well.
If you wish to use a taxi from the airport to the college, then you are advised to use a service from near to the Gormanston end, as Dublin rates are high and they tend to rip you off. I have used two taxi services, Bracken Cabs and Balbriggan Taxis and would rate them as fair. Their details are below
